Annie Dillard said it once. I believed it then and I believe it now. Nature is very much a now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t kind of an affair. What seemed obvious, disappeared. What was invisible is now plain as day. I also believe that the critters have some awareness, maybe even a lot. That they display to each other is well established. That they display to us seems, to me, equally obvious. For no apparent reason whatsoever, except to show himself off, today a giant jabiru flew alongside our boat—actually didn’t flew, just floated with his incredible 7-foot wingspan in full extension and motionless, approximately 15 feet from the side of the boat. I was stunned. By the time I gathered my wits, he surmised that he had entertained us all he wanted and did not want what came next (the obligatory photo-op) and so, with two flaps, veered off to the left. He flew to the exact same spot from which he launched a few seconds before. He accomplished nothing other than to buzz us and leave us with our jaws on the bottom of the boat. I believe that he was pleased. If one pays attention, nature gives us these shows frequently, albeit very much a now-you-see-it brief affair.
