The vast plain…. Almost desert except for the swamp. To think that this was once filled with acacia trees that have now been completely stripped by the elephants brings home what over population of any species (including our own) ultimately means. Now the elephants (along with the hippos, antelope, birds, etc.) are essentially 100% dependent on this swamp (the thin green line in the middle)….. Image Reply

The herd goes by without a rumble but rather a soft hush of repeated padding rather than thuds of big feet on big bodies….. Image Reply
The pace of the herd picks up dramatically as they approach the swamp after a night in the very dry (and essentially food-less) high ground…. They are hungry and, more than that, they are thirsty. They ate, bathed, drank, and went about 6 feet deep in the water….. Image Reply
