The funicular train track to get to the Budapest palace/castle was built in the mid-19th century to help the royals (and others) make the climb.

One of dozens of castles built to repel the invading Mongolian armies in the 12 century. It apparently succeeded, as the Mongolians were defeated. The ancient village below has been carefully preserved and is still lived in.
