Even with millenia of stream diversions, hand-made irrigation ditches, and wells, this river (just outside Ubud) still appears healthy and shrouded in jungle.

Construction techniques haven’t changed in centuries…. many/most of the bottoms of these bamboo posts are hanging on by 1-2″ on solid footing.

All the cement, other materials, and final finishing tools go up the bamboo and the working platform is the three horizontal pieces of bamboo.

… preparing this one to pour a slab of concrete on top… which will be carried up one bucket at a time by both men and women laborers.

We were woken one morning at 6AM to the sound of what seemed like every siren within miles. Our immediate reaction was another terrorist bombing incident on the Bali people (and tourism). After hours of sirens we learned that it was a fire in the “old market”. Here is the scene–one of the pavilions gutted. Unfortunate vendors wiped out. No insurance of course. Everything gone. Notice again how the motorbikes are ubiquitous.
