These two beautiful (in the eyes of the beholder) warthogs have paired up…… you can see the warts on the sides of their heads from which their names derive….. Image Reply
Even the prospect of rain….. something in the air, sets all the critters into flirtation and display mode. Here these African Crested Cranes were all jumping about, each male trying to look more grand, more conspicuous, more appealing, than the others. The females didn’t really seem all that interested in any of them—which, of course, made the males jump about even more. Sort of like sports events……. Image Reply
Recall the pictures of the Secretary Bird? You may recall the skinny neck, tail feathers stretched straight out back, and the ungainly posture. Well, that was when they weren’t in hot pursuit of a new girlfriend….. Now, in display mode, the neck is about 3 times bigger, the tail is straight up, and proud as …. A peacock. He had his territory staked out and as we watched him strutting about, we saw no reluctant virgins in the neighborhood…… poor fellow (at least for now). Image Reply
Even as it is surprising, it shouldn’t be surprising that there are so many skeletons of critters–large and small–all across the landscape. In this case, the park rangers remove the tusks of dead elephants in an effort to control ivory taking and poaching. Image Reply
Elephants, hippos, warthogs all change coloration depending on their diet. Here the elephants are decidedly darker than elsewhere (and no brownish tints as elsewhere)…. Image Reply
